Horrocks apparatus
for Medical College Community Laboratory
Horrocks apparatus is a simple field device used in medical colleges (especially Community Medicine/PSM) for water testing, specifically to determine the amount of bleaching powder (chlorine) required to disinfect water.
Horrocks apparatus is used to estimate the chlorine demand of water and to calculate the minimum quantity of bleaching powder needed to make water safe for drinking.
Applications:-
- Testing drinking water safety
- Disinfection of wells, tanks, and community water supplies
- Public health and sanitation work
Purpose in water testing:
- To calculate the correct dose of bleaching powder
- To ensure effective disinfection of drinking water
- To prevent under- or over-chlorination
Construction It consists of:
- 4 - 6 White Enamel / Black Enamel / Plastic Measuring cups
- Each cup holds equal volume of water
- A measuring spoon / Spatulla for bleaching powder
- Fresh bleaching powder Powder / Solution
- Starch–iodide indicator
- Clear Glass Tubes
- Nylon Brush
- Measuring Glass Pipette
- Stand for Glass Tubes
- Glass Stirrer
Working / Procedure :
- Fill cups with water
- Each cup is filled with a fixed quantity of the water sample.
- Add bleaching powder solution
- Increasing doses of bleaching powder solution are added to each cup (e.g., 1 drop in 1st cup, 2 drops in 2nd cup, etc.).
- Mix and wait
- Allow the cups to stand for about 30 minutes so chlorine can act.
- Add indicator
- Add starch–iodide indicator to each cup.
- Observe color change
- Cups without residual chlorine → no blue color
- First cup showing blue color → indicates presence of residual chlorine
- Determine dose
- The cup that first turns blue shows the minimum required dose of bleaching powder for disinfecting the water.
