Millikan’s Oil Drop Apparatus is a classic physics experiment setup used to measure the elementary electric charge of an electron. It was designed and used by Robert A. Millikan, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics (1923) for this work. To determine the charge of a single electron (≈ 1.602 × 10⁻¹⁹ coulomb) by observing the motion of tiny charged oil droplets in an electric field.

  1. High-Voltage DC Supply – Applies adjustable electric field. 

  2. ed condenser, a light source and a measuring microscope. The All are mounted on a common support. Consisting of a heavy cast iron base which is mounted on a steel pillar that carries the microscope and the lamp house. The microscope can be adjusted smoothly by slow motion screws in the horizontal as well as in the vertical direction. Atomizer is also fitted on the same carriage. The apparatus does not need any critical adjustment and the oil drops appear in microscope within seconds. Microscope is provided with micro meter scale.  

Millikans oil Drop Apparatus is used to measure the Elementary Electric Charge. To achieve this, tiny charged droplets of oil are finely sprayed into two metal electrodes placed horizontally. Heavier drops tend to fall downwards fastly due to their thermal velocity but the lighter ones remain almost steady inside the metal electrode condenser chamber. An adjustable electric voltage is applied between the metal electrode plates which creates an electric field inside the condenser chamber. By adjusting the electric voltage, drops can be moved upwards or downwards according to their charge.
